The Center for Educator Development in Fine Arts (CEDFA) held its Texas Fine Arts Summit XI June 10-11, 2010. The Summit focused on assessment strategies in the fine arts, specifically as they relate to the Historical/Cultural Heritage strand of the Fine Arts Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Participants explored the benefits of using portfolio assessments -- specifically electronic portfolios -- as tools to better gauge the depth of student learning of the Historical/Cultural Heritage TEKS in addition to students' interests and creativity over a large body of work and time. Summit attendees ascertained its effectiveness in the fine arts when compared with traditional forms of student assessment (e.g., multiple-choice tests). The design of the Summit was to provide opportunities for collaborative hands-on work time to put the ideas covered into practice and to emerge with a practical approach to TEKS-based arts instruction and assessment.
