Summit XI

The Center for Educator Development in Fine Arts (CEDFA) invites you to attend the Texas Fine Arts Summit XI to be held June 10-11, 2010. This year's Summit focuses on assessment strategies in the fine arts, specifically as they relate to the Historical/Cultural Heritage strand of the Fine Arts Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Participants will explore the benefits of using portfolio assessments -- specifically electronic portfolios -- as tools to better gauge the depth of student learning of the Historical/Cultural Heritage TEKS in addition to students' interests and creativity over a large body of work and time. Summit attendees can then ascertain its effectiveness in the fine arts when compared with traditional forms of student assessment (e.g., multiple-choice tests). The design of the Summit will provide opportunities for collaborative hands-on work time to put the ideas covered into practice and to emerge with a practical approach to TEKS-based arts instruction and assessment. The Summit is open to attendees on a first-come, first-served basis, and space is limited. Please register early. Discounted registration prices end May 15, 2010.

Special Pre-Summit Session, Thursday, June 10, 10 a.m - 2 p.m*

CEDFA will host four intensive Pre-Summit Sessions to provide participants with more depth on a topic of interest. Pre-Summit Sessions are available to attendees for only $65 (due at the time of registration). Pre-Summit attendees will receive an additional 4 hours of CPE credit. The fee for the Pre-Summit covers both the cost of the session as well as lunch for Pre-Summit participants. Pre-Summit sessions are outlined below:

  • Questioning Strategies that Build Students' Knowledge & Skills in Fine Arts
Effective questioning strategies not only help educators gauge student learning, but form the basis for empowering students to travel down highly original, creative, individual learning paths.
  • Fine Arts and Digital Literacy
The fine arts are powerful vehicles for building core digital and media literacy skills. This exciting new curriculum bridges visual art and technology to motivate students and give them an edge in thinking, creating, and responding to a rapidly changing world.
  • Engaging G/T Students in Fine Arts Inquiry
Inquiry and research skills are important for all students of the fine arts, and for our most gifted/talented learners they can be keys to unlocking the student's lifelong passion.
  • Accessible Arts: Creating Inclusive Classrooms for Students with and without Disabilities
Expressive arts therapists, with their training in psychology, child development and counseling, are able to model for teachers effective strategies for classroom behavior management as well as group dynamics skill building for inclusive fine arts classrooms.
