The University of Texas (UT) at Austin College of Fine Arts is partnering with the Texas Cultural Trust to offer an opportunity for high school music educators (band, choir, and orchestra) to explore the curriculum of a new innovative course, Music and Media Communications. This course has been approved by the Texas Education Agency as an innovative course that may serve as elective credit toward high school graduation. Furthermore, this innovative course has been included in the draft of the revised Fine Arts Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Music. If approved by the State Board of Education, Music and Media Communications will serve as fine arts credit toward high school graduation in addition to elective credit, effective the 2015-2016 school year.

Region Education Service Centers and selected school districts statewide will offer three-hour professional development sessions pertaining to Music and Media Communications for high school music educators during the months of March-June of the 2013 spring semester. The Arts and Digital Literacy initiative, which focuses on linking fine arts education and technology, is a result of a legislative appropriation to the Texas Cultural Trust and is a collaboration with The UT College of Fine Arts. Music and Media Communications is a project-based music curriculum for high school students that establishes the link between traditional music education and digital media and is designed to prepare students for post-secondary study in creative disciplines and for work in creative industries using technology as a primary tool. Digital literacy is the future of communication and commerce and creates learning experiences that develop students' capacities for critical thinking, creativity, imagination, and innovation.

All participants in the professional development sessions will receive Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credit hours.

Begin your registration by selecting the session and location you wish to attend from the drop down box below. Once you submit your choice, you will be provided an application for that session. Complete the application online and you will receive an email reminder of your registration.
